How It Works
Your IPL Photofacial delivers intense pulsed light (IPL) laser energy across several wavelengths. This light energy heats cells containing the unwanted melanin, causing them to die. Your body naturally eliminates them, revealing improved skin tone and texture.
IPL Photofacial therapy also tightens blood vessels in the treatment area to reduce redness, and it encourages collagen production for smoother, firmer skin.

The IPL Photofacial treatment at Dream Spa Medical takes an average of 30 to 60 minutes to complete. It can take more or less time, depending on the size and number of areas you want treated. As the intense pulsed light delivers therapeutic wavelengths to your skin, you will most likely experience some warming and possibly some slight discomfort. Many of our patients compare the way IPL Photofacial feels similar to having a rubber band snapped lightly on the skin.
After your treatment, the skin will likely appear red and slightly swollen. This will disappear within a few days, and you’ll begin to enjoy improved skin appearance.
The answer is a resounding “yes!” Your IPL Photofacial in Foxborough offers a number of therapeutic benefits to help with acne. IPL Photofacial treatments deliver customizable light wavelengths, with specific ones that can kill the bacteria that causes acne even as they destroy the skin cells responsible for uneven pigmentation—including redness caused by acne. It can also heat hair follicles where the acne-causing bacteria reside, killing bacteria below the surface as it helps unplug the follicle pore.
The therapeutic wavelengths boost natural collagen production in your skin for a lifted, tighter appearance. It also reduces the appearance of concave acne scarring. You’ll achieve excellent results without need of injections or surgery.
Yes, you can have IPL Photofacial therapy applied to most areas of your skin when you want to address sun damage and other issues. Most Dream Spa Medical patients use this therapy to improve skin tone and texture in areas including their:

Pre- and Post-Care Instructions for IPL Photofacial in Foxborough
- Do not use self-tanners 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
- Refrain from sun exposure and tanning beds 4 weeks prior to your appointment.
- Do not use active ingredients, such as acids, astringents, retinols, or topical prescriptions, 5 days prior to
your appointment. - Avoid prescription blood thinners as well as aspirin and ibuprofen for 1 week prior to your
appointment. - Women who are pregnant should not receive laser treatment. If you are nursing and would like to pursue treatment, we ask that you consult your PCP for clearance.
- If you are prone to Herpes Labialis outbreaks, we suggest pretreating with an antiviral medication for 2 days prior to your treatment and 2 days post-treatment. Dream Spa Medical is happy to provide you with a prescription, assuming that you are a candidate for this prescription.
- Please inform us of any tattoos or permanent makeup in the treatment area. We want to be sure to avoid treating near any ink, as the laser may disturb or discolor the area.
- It is best if you arrive to your appointment free of makeup, perfume, lotion, or deodorant in the treatment area.
- Moderate redness and swelling can be expected. This typically subsides in 1 to 3 days.
- You may take an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 4 to 6 weeks.
- Cool compresses can be used to reduce swelling and skin temperature.
- Do not use active ingredients, such as acids, astringents, retinols, or topical prescriptions, for 5 days after
your appointment. Use a gentle cleanser and basic hydration. - Refrain from heavy exercise and extreme heat (hot tubs, saunas, spa treatments) for 2 days.
- Avoid prescription blood thinners as well as heavy drinking, aspirin, and ibuprofen for 2 days.
- If a blister or crusting develops, treat with basic wound care.
- Your skin will be in a healing and regenerating phase for a minimum of 2 weeks. During this time, you will notice a darkening of the treated lesions. They will then begin to crust, and eventually your skin will most likely appear as though it has little pepper flakes on it. This will then dissipate, and your pigmentation will appear lighter and your skin brighter.
- If you are treating your body, we suggest avoiding tight, constricting clothes, as this will allow your skin to cool and heal properly.
You should anticipate social downtime following your treatment and schedule accordingly. Redness and swelling will resolve quickly, but brown spots and freckles will appear darker while healing. Do not pick, rub, or scratch the healing skin. Makeup may be applied throughout recovery.
