How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy is administered with a simple injection. A qualified member of our team will insert a small needle into the problematic vein, which will then trigger a shutdown, erasing the vein completely. The injection needle is small enough that it doesn’t necessitate any anesthesia. The treatment is also very fast; it only takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete!

Our highly trained Dream Spa Medical team is responsible for administering the sclerotherapy treatment. It’s a simple process that lasts about 15 to 30 minutes in total. It doesn’t require any downtime, and once it’s complete, you can begin to see a reduction in spider veins and varicose veins.
The key to this process is the “Sclerosing Agent” solution. Our team member will take this solution and inject it into the damaged blood vessels. The Sclerosing Agent will then irritate the veins, leading to a shutdown. The vein will collapse, sealing off blood flow. From there, the body redirects the blood to surrounding, healthy veins. The body will absorb the collapsed veins, completely erasing them.
No, sclerotherapy can be used for many other non-cosmetic vein treatments, including the reduction of swelling, cramping, and burning that is commonly associated with larger blood vessels. You can see this reduction surprisingly quickly. In fact, the vessels may fade entirely after just 2 to 4 weeks. Though, depending on the size of the vein, it may take 2 to 3 sessions to see full results.
In many ways, spider veins are similar to varicose veins, except unlike varicose veins, spier veins occur in small vessels. Spider veins are caused by a venous malfunction. Veins are meant to carry blood to and from the heart, and valves shut off the pathway to prevent the blood from coming back in the wrong direction. But sometimes, these valves malfunction and blood pools in the vein. As a result, these veins appear swollen, bulbous, and discolored. This is what gives spider veins their recognizable appearance.
But spider veins can be caused by other factors as well, including sun exposure and hormonal changes.
Varicose veins can appear in multiple places all over the body, including the thighs, ankles, and calves. They slightly protrude from the skin and can be many different colors, like red, purple, and blue. They may also cause some irritation, especially when a person stands or sits for extended periods of time.

- Women who are pregnant or nursing should not be treated with Sclerotherapy.
- We suggest that if you are actively trying to conceive, you consult your physician before being treated with Sclerotherapy.
- Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks’ time in between any vaccinations and your treatment.
- It is best to avoid smoking, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) for 24 to 48 hours prior to your treatment. This may increase your risk of bruising.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
- Please avoid the use of sunless tanner for at least 10 days prior to your treatment.
- Please ensure that you fully exfoliate any remnants of sunless tan product off your skin prior to your appointment.
- It is best if you arrive to your appointment free of makeup, perfume, lotion, or deodorant in the treatment area.
- Please do not shave or use depilatories on your legs the day of the procedure.
- Shower and thoroughly wash your legs prior to the procedure.
- We suggest that you wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. You may opt to bring a pair of shorts with you to change into for the treatment, as your legs will be fully exposed during the procedure.
- Upon completion of your treatment, Dream Spa Medical will provide you with one pair of waist-high compression tights, complimentary. These compression tights are to be worn 24 hours a day for 2 weeks following your treatment. The only time we suggest taking the tights off is to shower, after which you will need to immediately put the tights back on.
- If you would like to purchase additional tights, you may do so at Dream Spa Medical for your convenience or at any other store that sells compression tights with a minimum 20 to 25 gsm.
- We always suggest hydrating as much as possible prior to any treatment at Dream Spa Medical. It is a great way to help your body function at its best and help to accelerate your healing time as well as enhance results.
- The treated area may feel uncomfortable and slightly warm immediately after treatment. You can expect the treated area to develop bruising and/or mild to moderate swelling over the next few days following the procedure.
- The treated area may be painful, and you may experience muscle cramping in your legs for up to 5 days post-procedure. We suggest taking Tylenol for discomfort.
- We strongly encourage you to avoid direct sun exposure to the treated area or the use of tanning beds for at least 2 weeks following this procedure.
- Always use a physical protectant SPF (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) and reapply throughout the day.
- In some cases, you may experience a prolonged hive-like appearance to your skin, along with an itchy sensation in the treated area. This is normal and in most cases will subside within 2 to 4 days if treated with an over-the-counter hydrocortisone product.
- Avoid the use of perfumes, lotions, and deodorants in the treated area for 24 hours.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, and excessive temperatures for 24 hours.

- Keep your legs elevated while laying down or sleeping for at least 7 days.
- Continue to avoid all aspirin and blood-thinning medications for 4 days after your treatment.
- Although rare, it is possible to develop a firm lump or knot in the treatment area. This indicates a benign, superficial accumulation of trapped blood. If this occurs, please make an appointment for it to be evaluated and treated as soon as possible.
- Post-Sclerotherapy hyperpigmentation also occurs in 10 to 30% of patients within the first 3 to 4 weeks. This is benign and will resolve in 6 to 12 months.
